The University is an extremely cosmopolitan community in which both Nigerian and non-Nigerian students will feel at home. You will get a sense of our campus by visiting the pages of this website. Here is some complementary information you need to consider in planning to study in Maiduguri.
1. Language of instruction: English is the official language of the University and the medium of instruction. Although in the Departments of Languages & Linguistics and Arabic & Islamic Studies, languages other than English may be used, no student can function effectively in these or other Departments without a good command of English. Students from neighbouring Francophone countries normally do not have any problems, as long as they plan for about one year of intensive English tuition prior to the commencement of their studies. The Alliance francaise located on campus (Tel:076-234414 ) may be contacted for advice on available and appropriate English language tuition. The International Students Association (ISA) at the University may also be of help. The ISA can be contacted through the Student Affairs Office of the University.
2. Admission: Admission into regular programmes of the University is based on the possession of specific qualifications and/or passing of stipulated examinations.
For Bachelor’s degree programmes, university matriculation examination ( UME) candidates have to meet the cut-off point specified (in the examination year) by the University for the course of their choice. They will also be required to have five O level, SSCE or NECO credit passes in relevant subjects, which often includes English language and Mathematics. Direct Entry candidates are normally admitted straight into the second year of studies, and they would normally have any of the following: A levels, diplomas from recognised institutions, or terminal qualifications such as NCE issued by Colleges of Education and comparable institutions. Except they are applying for other programmes in respect of which places are in any case usually limited, non-Nigerian students would normally be expected to have an acceptable equivalent to the Nigerian Senior Secondary School Certificate. The French Section of the Department of Languages & Linguistics evaluates and translates qualifications issued by French-speaking institutions.
Postgraduate admission for Master's and doctoral degrees is normally based on the evaluation of the relevant qualification (Bachelor's degree certificates and transcripts, or those for the Master's). Different conditions may apply to postgraduate diplomas. These and waivers for other courses of study would normally be contained in advertisements.
