A foundation Faculty of the University, the Faculty of Science has since inception been providing training in the basic sciences to prospective students of Agriculture, Engineering, Medicine, among others. This is in addition to the Faculty's own degree programmes as well as the one-year Remedial Science Programme. The conviction of staff and students is that technological breakthroughs for a country such as Nigeria are premised on a strong foundation in the basic sciences.
The Faculty began with four Departments in 1976, namely, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics and Physics. Geology was added in 1979.
Graduates of the Faculty are to be found in the public service and in private sectors of the economy, providing invaluable support to programmes with implications for national development.
