The establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Maiduguri has been a long time dream of the promoters of the university. The need to increase manpower and sound professional education in pharmacy in the country, particularly in the northern region is based on the existing gap of knowledge in research and teaching on one hand, and professional practice of pharmacy on the other. Since drugs occupy a central position in healthcare and well being of the citizenry, it becomes imperative that we increase locally trained scientific manpower in pharmacy.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy programme was included in the University master plan in the year 1995. Subsequently, the Senate of the University approved the Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree progamme and the Academic Curriculum to run it in line with the joint specifications of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Pharmacists' Council of Nigeria (PCN) minimum academic standards (MAS). The introduction of the programme is in consonance with the institutional mission of this University, which aims at promoting scholarship and learning in Arts, Humanities, Sciences, and Technology.

PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of the pharmacy programme is to produce well-educated graduates and trained professionals for a wide range of scientific, professional and managerial functions, which best serve the needs of the community with sufficient adaptability to meet the demands of a changing health care delivery system. Students will be provided with the opportunity to apply pharmaceutical and biomedical knowledge to problems of drug therapy related to patient care. Students will become aware of the broader social content of health care and use of medicines in order to encourage the concept of pharmaceutical care within the health care delivery system. The ultimate objective is to produce graduate practitioners with knowledge, skills and motivation to contribute meaningfully to proper patient care, public health, teaching, research and local drug production. The programme, which is based on an internationally competitive curriculum, will be able to increase the necessary knowledge and manpower that is required to achieve excellence in pharmacy education and mitigate the deplorable drug situation in the country on the long term.
