Established in 1976, Arts was one of the foundation faculties of the University. The Faculty trains students to develop competencies in the appreciation and appraisal of intellectual ideas, particularly as these relate to the construction of identity and the expression of difference. In the six Departments of the Faculty, namely, Arabic & Islamic Studies, Creative Arts, English, History, Languages & Linguistics and Mass Communication, manpower is trained to support Nigeria's policy objectives in the socio-cultural sector. While maintaining an international outlook, research within the Faculty is also ecologically sensitive, shedding invaluable light on humanistic values in the University's catchment area of North Eastern Nigeria.
The Faculty's slant for socially relevant humanistic scholarship has put staff in the public glare both nationally and internationally. Experience garnered from involvement in externally solicited work is ploughed back into the classroom, thus demonstrating the link between putative recondite theory and real-world problems, quite apart from giving the Faculty's graduates an edge on the job market, locally and internationally.
The Faculty currently runs B.A., M.A, Ph.D. as well as undergraduate and postgraduate diploma programmes:
